Carrie Rodriguez – Love and Circumstance
A fine songwriter in her own right, for her third album, Love and Circumstance, Carrie Rodriguez has opted to pay homage to the American and country music greats that came before her, some who are still creating contemporary music.
Tackling the music of such impressive artists as Merle Haggard, Hank Williams, Lucinda Williams – just to name a few of the well known names she’s borrowing from for this disc – can be a daunting task for any musician, but Rodriguez pulls it off with aplomb.
Rather than reworking the songs, she utilizes the strength of their structure and songwriting, and simply uses her beautifully sweet vocals to reinterpret the songs. Be sure to check out “I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry” and “I Started Loving You Again.” This Mexican-American songwriter also makes her first foray into Tejano music, singing in Spanish on a cover of “Lu Punalada Trapera,” a track that closes out the album and shouldn’t be missed.
