Only a month after signing with Meryl Music Distribution, (which helped produce Joan Jett, and the Dollyrots among other) Antigone Rising has finished its latest release 5th record, 23 Red, will be available on iTunes August 2nd.

Overall the album is a strong testament to the grit and perseverance of the 18-years-strong female country-pop-rock band from New York, which was started by Kristen and Cathy Henderson.

And it seems that losing and gaining band members has made for the development of an evolved sound. A collection of loves stories and tales of moving toward a brighter futures, “23 Red” is perfect for a sunny walk in the park. The album’s opener “No Remedy,” looks back on a heartbreak, but this is a good thing. Though most people wouldn’t want to relive the images of a breakup, this song is just too catchy to not press repeat.

The album continues to take listeners through the rollercoaster of love. Getting a lot of play in the South, “Everywhere is Home,” is relatable for anyone who has “mixed hope and doubt,” like Nini Camps says in the song.

Vocalist Nini Camps’ pipes continue to ring pure in “Borrowed Time,” which delivers the meaningful message of valuing every second you have. On a high note, “Pink Glasses” is a bright and cheery song that delivers a hopefully message for the future of the band.

In all, album is catchy and relatable, showcasing great vocals and instrumental work from the band Antigone Rising is definitely overlooked and worth a listen.

Upcoming Tour Dates:

SEPT

9 Philadelphia Tin Angel- CD release

17 NYC Mercury Lounge- CD

Who they Are : Comprised of a few groups, Lorraine Leckie and Her Demons is like a matryoshka doll, stacking and traveling and growing in number. “It’s funny because I have one rock band and one female trio,” says Lorraine Leckie who also performs solo. The female trio consists of a violinist, a guitarist (Leckie) and a bass player; while the other ‘Demons’ play your average band instruments in a distinguished way. Previously working in another art form, Lorraine Leckie was a make-up artist that decided to pick up a guitar at the age of 37. “I started playing guitar and writing songs for fun. Performing and making a career out of it and it all happened really quickly.”

What they Sound Like: This psychedelic funk, eerie bluesy folk, throttle array of sound Lorraine generates cannot be summed up into any one genre or compared to any artist. “Some of it is humaristic, some dark.” Unlike many artists, when starting off Leckie decided to turn down the tunes of her favorite artists in order to find her own sound. “Completely stopped listening to music for the first five years of playing, except for a little Howlin’ Wolf and Robert Johnson who’s a purest. I stayed away from my favorites because I didn’t want to sound like them. Music has such power on a brain.” After finding her sound Leckie returned to listening to her idols Patti Smith and PJ Harvey, “It takes a year to find your style in an art form, but when you do it becomes secure.”

Why They’re Hot: Leckie is a good inspiration for those who falsely think they are too old to start something new. “For those who want to start something later in their life and think they’re too old, they’re definitely not.” Currently, Leckie is touring solo and working with the cartoonist Anthony Haden-Guest. Together they are writing several verses to go with cartoons that Haden-Guest is creating.

Must Downloads:
Hillbilly, Martini Eyes, Getaway Car, Listen to the Girl, I Met a Man, Ontario. All songs can be sampled via Leckie’s Myspace page as well as her website, which features her new solo album, Martini Eyes and free download, “Red Light.”

Here’s how it works: Over the course of three days, lady camp-goers are taught to play their favorite rock instruments (or sing) and form bands with women who share their tastes (If you’re shy, fear not: Organizers sort this out for you). Camp activities include hours of practice time and T-shirt silkscreening lessons. The weekend culminates in a rock show at an established club. If you’ve already signed up or are looking for something of the stocking-stuffer variety, you can also pick up a 2011 Calendar for just 10 bucks.

Check out the perfect gifts for girls who rock!

Not sure what to get the rocker girl in your life? We picked out eight great gifts — complete with online links — for you. Happy shopping!

The Purr-fect Scent
Ladies who want to evoke the spirit of “California Gurls” onstage now have something to meow about! Katy Perry’s new signature perfume “Purr” — a blend of peach nectar, forbidden apple and green bamboo scents supported by jasmine blossom, pink freesia, Bulgarian rose, vanilla orchid, white amber, creamy sandalwood and musk notes — smells like a Teenage Dream. According to Perry, “Purr is a natural extension of who I am as a woman.” $45-65. Available at www.nordstrom.com

The Perfect Pickings
While looking for a little holiday pick-me-up on Guitar Center’s website, we came across Clayton’s durable Acetal guitar/bass picks, which feature pinup artwork by artist Susan Heidi. They’re perfect for the tattooed vixen or viking who likes to strum something sexy. $4.99 for a six-pack. Available at Guitar Center stores, and online at GuitarCenter.com

For Pregger Rock Moms
Online boutique RockstarMoms.com is known for its edgy, stage-worthy fashions. One of our favorites, the orangy-red-yellow tube top with the Rolling Stones lip, is as flattering as it is fun. Or, as new mama and drummer Trish of NYC alt-rock favorites The Natch! puts it, “This tube top is the bomb!” $34.95. Available at Rockstarmoms.com

The Gift That Keeps on Giving
With roaring metal guitars and track names like “Drunkaholic”, female-fronted band Stark’s album Race to the Floor is a far cry from your favorite Christmas carol. But the CD has enough rock nuggets to keep you entertained past the holiday season. $5. Available online at CDBaby.com.

An Acoustic Guitar Bursting with Color
Daisy Rock’s Pixie Acoustic/Electric guitar — available in colors like Pink Sparkle and Blueberry Burst – is a full-scale instrument designed especially for girls, with a slim, narrow neck and small body. Plus, it comes with a gig bag! $249.99. Available at DaisyRock.com

Mood Music
Listening to indie-folk songwriter Lorraine Leckie’s simple but brilliant album “Martini Eyes” is addictive. And perfect for cold, winter nights. $6.93. Available at Limewire’s online store.

Digital Fix
They play sexy indie rock and ska with a feminine touch. What’s even better, New York City’s co-ed band The Rosies (half guys, half gals) has a song to please everyone on their five-track digital EP. $5. Available online at http://therosies.bandcamp.com

Electric Lady with Accessories
Buy a smooth, Alder wood-finished Fender Standard Stratocaster at Sam Ash this holiday season, and you’ll get a chorus and distortion pedal to match. We think the Strat is stunning — and its modern “C” shape Maple neck comes with the choice of Rosewood or Maple Fingerboard and vintage-style tremolo arm. Gig bag included. Available at Sam Ash stores and SamAsh.com
